Bison Open Preview (11-13-2021)

The Bison Open as it has been in year's past, will once again, for the most part be a three way dance between Minnesota, South Dakota State and North Dakota State.  I'd like to think that Minnesota State - Moorhead will have a couple good showings as well.

125

This ought to be a cake walk for McKee in route to capturing a title.  I don't see anybody even remotely challenging him. A weekend of working on technique and conditioning.  I'd like to see a good performance out of Cole Jones, representing NCAA Division II & I would think he has the ability to pull off some wins Vs his Division I competition.

Kellyn March
133

Same for March at 133 as for McKee at 125.  Don't see him being challenged in route to winning a title.

141

I think this could end up a very fun weight.  Carlson is the obvious #1 seed, as I would think Polanco takes the #2 and Droegemueller takes the #3.  The semi-final between Polanco and Droegemueller should prove to be an exciting one.  Polanco is ranked in the top 25 at the moment and while Droegemueller is currently out of the top 33, he's more than once proven himself against higher ranked competition.  If Droegemueller were to win this matchup, it'd be fun to see if he can finally get over the hump Vs Carlson.  Carlson has defeated him in six straight matches, but they have all been close.    I don't see Moorhead's Mason Schulz upsetting any of these guys, but perhaps he can give them a match.

149

I think we're looking at a final of Blockhus Vs Price. Both of these guys at the moment are top 25 or close to it and a victory for one over the other is going to help on the resume.  I would think Van Maanen would be the clear favorite for 3rd place.

157

I do think that Lee is a Darkhorse contender for the NCAA title this season, but the last thing I would do in this scenario is overlook Jared Franek, who himself is a candidate for All American honors. Sometimes wrestlers ease themselves into the season and sometimes they're tested right away. This is an example of the latter.

165

A rather competitive weight among the three DI teams that will be in competition.  See Cook with the #1 seed, Weber with the #2 and Sparks with the #3.  Weber owns an 8-5 victory over Sparks, and such a likely semi-final should prove to once again be a good close match.  If Weber wins again he'll face Cook in the finals, who defeated him 17-8 the last time they met.

174

Opportunity awaits at this weight class as DeVos should take the #1 seed with Krattiger at #2 and Brenner at #3. In terms of earning allocations for the year, it would do Brenner good to upset Krattiger, Krattiger good to upset DeVos and for DeVos to prevent getting upset by either.

184

Salazar is currently ranked, whereas King is not, therefore Salazar should be the #1 seed here, but I wouldn't count King out for contention to win a title. Despite being unranked, when he was at 174 he did have some notable wins.  These included a 10-8 decision over Tyler Eischens of Stanford, a 7-5 decision over Anthony Mantanona of Oklahoma and a 6-3 decision over Julien Broderson of Iowa State.  Such a victory over Salazar would see King into the rankings at 184.

197

Sloan owns a 9-5 as well as a 14-0 victory over Joles and the last time he wrestled Pentz he defeated him 16-1.  I think we're looking at our Bison Open Champion at 197 lbs.  What I'm anxious to see though is the match between Joles and Pentz.  I'm still not 100% sure what to make of Pentz, whose biggest wins have all been via fall. Joles, hasn't had much of an opportunity to prove himself yet, but he does own a worth mentioning victory over Jaron Smith of Maryland by a score of 9-6.  I think this match is better on the mat, than what it is on paper.

HWT

Steveson is just on a whole other level. If the rest of NCAA wrestling is guns, tanks, choppers and grenades, he's a nuclear bomb. It'd be nice to think at some point he might be given a match this season, but it's not going to happen here.  He toyed around with Nevills in a 15-6 major decision and it took him all of thirty-three seconds to stick Metz.  Now what we will see is a good semi-final between Nevills and Metz. The last these two met, Nevills squeaked by with a 1-0 win.
