Analyzing the NCAA's "DREAM MATCHES"

STEPHEN ABAS VS SPENCER LEE 125 lbs

Abas wins comfortably by two takedowns, possibly three. The speed and more importantly combination of patience and methodical strategy would overcome the easily frustrated Hawkeye. You're not out-muscling or getting a seasoned Abas to make a mistake or get out of position. A score of 6-3, 7-4, would most likely take place.
DAN GABLE VS TOM BRANDS 133 lbs
This one would be interesting to see. I think on their feet it might be about even, although I can see Gable capitalizing upon an over aggressive Brands. I think there's no way Brands could keep Gable on the mat, but I can see Gable with his relentless and unforgiving ride keeping Brands on the mat. I think we're talking a 1972 Gold Medalist Vs a 1996 Gold Medalist here...in other words both of them at their best. In that case, I take Gable 1-0 or 2-0. LOGAN STIEBER Vs KYLE DAKE 141 lbs Wow, this truly is a dream match. What's funny about both Stieber and Dake in comparison, is matching up their losses. Dake lost to Reece Humphry of Ohio State, Zach Bailey of Oklahoma, Kevin LaValley of Bucknell and Donnie Vinson of Binghamton. Stieber lost to Frank Perelli of Cornell, Zain Retherford of Penn State, Jarrod Patterson of Oklahoma and Jason Lara of Oregon State. It's so weird to see some of the names they lost to, considering both were four time NCAA champions. My point in bringing this up is to show that despite how untouchable we sometimes treat them, both were vulnerable. I want to give the edge to Dake for the simple fact that all four of his NCAA titles were without dispute. Two of Stieber's were questionable. I'm not the only one who thinks there were uncalled points in favor of both Oklahoma State's Jordan Oliver and Iowa's Tony Ramos. While a great match, by the time Dake was a senior, his defense was impregnable. It'd be close, but gonna go with Dake. ZAIN RETHERFORD VS BILL KOLL 149 lbs Bill Koll's senior year was 1948 & things were a lot different back then. Technique wasn't as good, guys weren't as well conditioned and argue those two points if you want but I am 100% correct in saying that guys weren't anywhere near as strong. It's an unfair advantage in so many ways, but I think in looking at advancements alone, Retherford would handle Koll rather easily. Maybe even a major decision. PAT SMITH VS JORDAN BURROUGHS 157 lbs This one is all about timing. A 1994 Pat Smith would tech a 2007 Jordan Burroughs. Yet I think a 2011 Jordan Burroughs might major a 1990 Pat Smith. Yet this isn't about putting one at their strongest vs one at their weakest. This is about putting both at their best. Could Smith at his best stop Burroughs double leg? Could Smith, the monster he was in the top position sink in the legs and get a turn on Burroughs? I think both of these are fair questions to ponder. On their feet I'm going with Burroughs. Mat wrestling I'm going with Smith. For the simple fact that I think taking Smith down would be more doable than turning Burroughs, I'm giving Burroughs a microscopic edge. MARK SCHULTZ VS DAVID TAYLOR 165 lbs Schultz is lbs for lbs one of the strongest wrestlers the NCAA has ever seen. Ed Banach was nothing but a slab of muscle, and Schultz went out and made him look like he'd never lifted a weight in his life. It's unreal the grizzly bear/gorilla strength that Schultz had. Then on top of it he was athletic, limber and flexible. Taylor on the other hand was (and STILL IS for that matter) a master technician. His ability to transition and scramble was in itself, damn near a new style of wrestling. As savvy as he is on the mat, I don't know how effective Schultz's Hulk strength would be on him. This one is the hardest for me to call. Since I have to make a decision, going with Taylor. DANNY HODGE VS ED BANACH 174 lbs Absolute strength Vs Absolute strength. We have two hosses going at it in a battle that may never end. Imagine arm wrestling yourself. That's essentially what this wrestling match would be. To be more honest than most would be, a great advantage that Hodge had in winning his three titles was that he wrestled in a time when guys weren't lifting weights. He had a natural strength that couldn't be matched by pushups and farm work alone. Could Banach, who spent a tremendous amount of time in the weight room have matched strength with Hodge? That's the real question to ask when looking at this match up. As much of a bull as Banach was, I find it hard to believe that Hodge could get on top of him and turn him the way he did so many of his opponents. Yet I just can't get myself to imagine Banach getting his arms around Hodge and tossing him the way he did so many of his opponents. Can we go back to a time when matches could end in a tie?
CAEL SANDERSON VS BO NICKAL 184 lbs Sorry Bo, but this one, no question in my mind goes to Sanderson. Nickal might survive getting majored but even that would be difficult. Sanderson by no less than five points. J'DEN COX Vs JAKE ROSHOLT 197 lbs This would be a very, very fun match. I don't think either one of these guys would be able to ride the other very long. Both were (still are) so good on their feet that imagining either of them getting a takedown on the other is very difficult. A trivia fact that many have since forgotten is that although Rosholt won three NCAA titles, he was only able to win one BIG 12 title. In an NCAA tournament match, I can see the match going either way. Yet in any other setting, I think Cox takes the win. Nothing dominant or significant. It'd be by a point or two, but going with Cox. CARLTON HASELRIG VS KYLE SNYDER HWT Snyder's dual loss to Michigan's Adam Coon his senior year is the one and only reason I'll go with Haselrig in his potential match up. He was just so big, so strong, so powerful and so athletic that he was impossible to score on. I think he could get the needed minute of riding time that he needed, escape from Snyder and win the match 2-1. Those are my opinions, how about your's?!?!?!

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Athletic Coast Conference Team Championships won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

To my knowledge in the history of ACC wrestling only one school that no longer has wrestling won a title.  If this is incorrect, please let me know.

Clemson 1991

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Southern Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

The Southern Conference continues to sponsor wrestling to this day.  We unfortunately have lost teams over the years though due to their schools dropping the sport.  Some of these schools won SOCON titles.

William and Mary (5) 1968, 1969, 197, 1971, 1977

East Carolina (5) 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976

North Carolina Greensboro (2) 1997, 2010 (shared the title with Appalachian State)

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: PAC-12 Team Championships won by Schools who no Longer have wrestling

The PAC-12 remains a Division I conference to this day producing NCAA All American and Champions year in and year out.   Unfortunately over the years we've lost some of our teams, many of which won PAC-12 titles.

PAC-12 Championships won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

Washington State (1) 1963

UCLA (1) 1964

Washington (2) 1971, 1974

Oregon (3) 1975, 1981, 1982

Boise State (6) 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011

Gone, Lost, and Forgotten: Old Dominion Athletic Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference formed in 1976, at one time sponsored wrestling.  I'm not sure when they started sponsoring wrestling or when they stopped sponsoring wrestling.

I was only able to find information regarding a few tournaments.  One of which was won by Lynchburg in 1980.

If you have any more information regarding Old Dominion Athletic Conference Wrestling please let me know.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Team Titles won by Schools that no Longer Have wrestling

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association formed in 1888, sponsored wrestling from the 1969-1970 season through the 1983-1984 season.

The 1980 tournament was won by Kalamazoo who no longer has a wrestling program.

All of the other teams that won MIAA conference titles today have wrestling teams, although they did drop for a spell in their history.

Adrian who won the 69', 70', 71' Championships had wrestling from 1968-1969 (Yes they won the conference team title their first year of wrestling) through 1983-1984.   They reinstated the wrestling program for the 2015-2016 season.

Alma has had wrestling from 1968-1969 through 1983-1984.  They won the 1981 & 1982 MIAA team title.  They reinstated their wrestling program in the 2011-2012 season.

And the best news of all is that the MIAA began sponsoring wrestling again in last season!!!! (2018-2019)  The title was won by Olivet.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Virginia Collegiate Athletic Association Team Titles won by schools that no longer have wrestling

The Virginia Collegiate Athletic Association had a very short existence from the 1972-1973 season through the 1974-1975 season.  It did however sponsor wrestling.

James Madison who no longer has a wrestling program, won the 1975 title.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

At one time the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) sponsored wrestling.  They began sponsoring wrestling in the 1971-1972 season and stopped sponsoring wrestling after the 1994-1995 season.

After further research this article has been updated to reflect the entire history of MEAC wrestling.

Here are the championships won by each team

Howard (3) - 1972, 1973, 1995

Morgan State (13) - 1974, 1977, 1978, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994

North Carolina A&T (2) - 1975, 1976

South Carolina State (5) - 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984

Delaware State (1) - 1984

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Texas Collegiate Championships Team Winners from Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

Of all Collegiate wrestling tournaments, opens and invites this has to be the one that puzzles me the most.  From 1974 through 1979 there was a tournament held in Texas, made up of strictly Texas teams.  A few of these teams like Texas El-Paso & Richland Community College were varsity programs.  Others were club teams and others were strictly intramural.   Then some, I'm not 100% what they were. TCU for example wrestled in duals against varsity programs, but unlike Texas-El Paso they did not participate in an NCAA qualifier.

Nevertheless here are the schools that won the Texas Collegiate championships.  Ironically enough both Richland and Texas A&M both had varsity wrestling programs at one time, so they count as schools that officially used to have varsity wrestling, that no longer do.

Texas A&M (2) 1974, 1978

Richland (4) 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Yankee Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

The Yankee Conference formed in 1946 ran through the 1996-1997 season.  I believe the conference began sponsoring wrestling in the early 1970's and I'm not sure when they stopped sponsoring wrestling.  I imagine it was long before the 1996-1997 season, seeing nearly all of the teams in the conference had dropped wrestling long before.  Yet I'm not sure exactly when Yankee Conference wrestling ended.

Here's what I do know

Yankee Conference Titles Won by Schools That No Longer Have Wrestling

University of Rhode Island (3) 1973, 1974, 1976

Boston (2) 1975, 1977

If you have any information regarding Yankee Conference Wrestling Please let me know.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: State University of New York Athletic Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

The State University of New York Athletic Conference formed in 1958 used to sponsor wrestling as an official sport of the conference.  I think it's stupid that they no longer do, considering that 5 of the 11 teams still have a wrestling program.  (At one time I know that 10 of the 11 teams had wrestling.  Maybe even all eleven but I have yet to find anything on Morrisville.)

Nevertheless the proof I have that SUNY-AC wrestling was at one time a real thing is that Potsdam (who no longer has wrestling) won the 1973 team title.

If you have any information regarding SUNY-AC wrestling please let me know.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Northern Illinois Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer have wrestling

I can't find much concerning the Northern Illinois Conference.   I think it may have been what eventually formed into the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) but that didn't form until 2006 and I can't find any prior history as to what it was called before.

Never the less, I found results for two tournaments, both won by schools that No Longer have wrestling.

Benedictine (1) 1973

Concordia-Chicago (1) 1974

If you have any information regarding Northern Illinois Conference wrestling beyond the little I have, please share.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Big West Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Big West which originally formed in 1969 as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association at one time sponsored wrestling.  They may have sponsored wrestling right from the get go and had a tournament in 1970 but the first one I was able to find was 1971.

I only have results from 1971 through 1981.   I'm not sure when the Big West stopped sponsoring wrestling.  If you have any information regarding Big West Wrestling 1982 until the date it dropped wrestling as a sponsored sport, please let me know.

Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling that Won Big West Conference Titles

Long Beach State (1) 1971

San Jose State (7) 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1980, 1981

Utah State (2) 1978, 1979

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Florida Championships Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer have Wrestling.

From what I have been able to find the Florida Championships was a tournament that began in the 1969-1970 season when the University of Florida added wrestling to their athletics.  I believe it ended after Florida dropped wrestling after the 1978-1979 season.  I was only able to find results from three tournaments though.

Miami-Dade (1) 1970

Florida (2) 1972, 1973

I want to say for Miami-Dade that I'm not for certain if the campus in Westview or if the campus in Kendall is the school to win the 1970 championship.  To my understanding they both had athletics and they both had their own wrestling team.

If you have any more information regarding the Florida Championships please let me know.

Thank you.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Metropolitan Championships won by Teams that No Longer Have wrestling

I don't know much about the Metropolitan Championships.   I simply know when studying the history of Montclair State wrestling that it is a tournament that they used to win a lot.  How many times, I don't know for sure.  I was only able to confirm three, but I think they won it a lot more than that.  New York Maritime, another team we lost over the years won titles their too.

New York Maritime (2) 1970, 1971

Montclair State (3) 1976, 1977, 1978

If you have more information on the Metropolitan Championships please let me know.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Southern California Intercollegiate Championships Team Winners that No Longer have Wrestling

I don't know much about the Southern California Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships other than the tournament was held in Southern California during the 60's and 70's and it involved teams from all Divisions.   Not sure when it started or when it ended.

Schools that no longer have wrestling that won Southern California Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship Team Titles

Claremont Mudd Scripps (2) 1968, 1973

Cal Tech (3) 1970, 1971, 1972

Pomona Pitzer (1) 1976

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Great Lakes Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

Honestly I have no idea what the Great Lakes tournament was.  At first I thought it might be the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. I know that isn't right cause I have records going back to 1968 and the GLIAC wasn't formed until 1972.  Then I thought it might be the Great Lakes Valley Conference.  Can't be that either because that wasn't formed until 1978.

So what exactly the Great Lakes tournament is referring to, at this point I do not know.  If you know, let me know.

The other thing that really hits home that Great Lakes refers to neither GLIAC or GLVC is the fact that Denison University was never a part of either.  They won two titles.

Anway....

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: USA South Athletic Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The USA South Athletic Conference formally known as the Dixie Conference was formed in 1963.  (other conferences also used the name Dixie as well, but this is the one that had wrestling.)

When exactly the conference began to sponsor wrestling and when exactly it stopped sponsoring wrestling I do not know.  If you know, please let me know.

What I do know:

Methodist (1) 1968

St Andrews (1) 1969

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) established in 1932 began sponsoring wrestling in the 1955-1956 season.  The conference still sponsors wrestling today with 9 of the 16 schools fielding wrestling programs.

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

Formed in the 1962-1963 season, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference was at one time known as the Collegiate Athletic Conference.  I'm not exactly sure when they first began sponsoring wrestling or when they stopped.  All I know is that they did sponsor wrestling at one time.

If you have more information regarding SCAC wrestling please let me know.

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: First Colonies Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

I have no idea what the First Colonies tournament was.  If it was a conference, an open, an invitational...I have no idea.  I can find nothing on it other than a few teams that no longer have wrestling that won it.

You have any more information on it, I'd much appreciate it.

Pfeiffer (1) 1965

St Francis (1) 1967

William & Mary (1) 1968

West Chester (1) 1969

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Colonial Athletic Association Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) sponsored wrestling from 1991-1992 through 2012-2013.

James Madison which no longer has wrestling won titles in 1999 and in 2000.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Tri-State Conference Championships won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

Not to be confused with Tri-State Conference which was made up of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Ohio (I guess Quad-State didn't sound as good to them)

Not to be confused with Tri-State Conference which is made up of Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota (I guess Quad-State didn't sound good to them either)

Not to be confused with Tri-State State Athletic Conference made up of Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska

The Tri-State Conference made up of schools from Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota (I promise you it is not the same as the Tri-State Athletic Conference ) that ran from 1960-1978.

I have information from 1960-1961 through 1967-1968.

If you have information about the tournament from 1968-1969 through 1977-1978, I would really appreciate it.  I went to Northwestern College which was part of the conference at one time, and I'd love to know if they ever won a wrestling title.   Thank you.

Westmar which not only no longer has a wrestling program, but is no longer around, at all won to my knowledge four conference team titles.  They may have won more.

Here's what I know

Westmar (4) 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association team titles won by Schools that No Longer have wrestling

The Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) formed in 1924, began sponsoring wrestling in the 1966-1967 season.  The conference still sponsors wrestling to this day.

MIAA Team Championships won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

Northwest Missouri State (3)  1967, 1982, 1985, 1986

Truman State (5) 1968, 1969, 1970, 1978, 1979

Lincoln (1) 1976

Missouri State (1) 1981

IF you really want to make my day, tell me I made a mistake adding Truman State to the list and that they came to their census and reinstated the wrestling program.  What a foolish decision it has been in Kirksville, Missouri to drop such a storied program.

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Missouri College Athletic Union Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Missouri College Athletic Union existed from 1924 through the 1970-1971 season.  When exactly they first started sponsoring wrestling, I do not know.   They had wrestling up until the end though.

What's confusing is that there is a school, called Graceland that won three team titles.  If it is referring to Graceland as in Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, they still have a wrestling team.  Albeit they dropped it for thirty some odd years and then added it back a few years ago, but they have wrestling.

I wonder though, and if you can answer this, it'd be much appreciated....did Graceland in Independence, Missouri have a wrestling program at one point?

If so, then they'd be the answer as to what is meant by Graceland.

If so....

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formed in 1920, sponsored wrestling from the 1946-1947 season through the 2002-2003 season.  For the most part the conference was dominated by Augsburg and St. John's, both of whom still have wrestling to this day.

There were a few teams throughout the history of MIAC wrestling, that no longer have wrestling, that won team titles though.  Here they are.

Macalester (5) 1948, 1949, 1950, 1959, 1960

Gustavus Adolphus (3) 1965, 1966, 1967

St. Thomas (2) 1981, 1986

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Empire 8 Team Championships won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Empire 8 made up of strictly NCAA Division III Schools in New York was originally known as the ICAC (Independent Collegiate Athletic Conference).    It was formed during the 1964-1965 school year and sponsored wrestling from the get go.   As to win Empire 8 dropped wrestling as a sponsored sport, I do not know.

What I do know is schools from 1964-1965 through 1980-1981 that won the team title.

Here are schools that no longer have wrestling that won the Empire 8 championship.

RPI (3) 1965, 1966, 1972

Union (2) 1967, 1969

St. Lawrence (7)  1970, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979

If you have information on Empire 8 wrestling from 1982 until the date it stopped sponsoring wrestling please let me know.

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Evergreen Conference Championships won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Evergreen Conference made up of schools from Idaho, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia existed from 1938-1984.  I believe they began sponsoring wrestling during the 1965-1966 season.

I think but am not for certain that Central Washington won every single conference title.

Don't quote me on that.

I do know that they won 1966, 1967, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974.

I don't information on the other tournaments.  I think that Evergreen Conference sponsored wrestling up until it dissolved in 1984.

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Lake Forest Invitational Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling.

Lake Forest had wrestling from 1955-1956 through 1974-1975. When exactly they started hosting an invitational I do not know.  I would figure that they kept hosting it yearly through 1975, but I can only find results for it from 1965 through 1969.

Of teams that no longer have wrestling programs

Kalamazoo won 1965
Carleton won 1969

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: North Central Invitational Team Titles won by Schools that no Longer have Wrestling

I know very little about the North Central Invitational other than it was a college wrestling tournament that was held in Chicago one year.  In 1963 it was won by The University of Illinois-Chicago which no longer has wrestling.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Phoenix Invitational Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

I know very little about the Phoenix College Invitational Tournament other than it was held at Phoenix College and that Phoenix College won it in 1963.  I imagine the tournament probably stopped being held when Phoenix College dropped their wrestling program.  I have no idea when that was.

If you have information regarding it. Let me know.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

The SDIC (South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference) was a conference made up of mostly NAIA schools from South Dakota, although two northwestern Iowa schools joined in the last years of the conference.  The conference started in 1917 and ran through the 1999-2000 season.

As to when SDIC wrestling started and as to when it ended, I have no idea.

All I know is that Black Hills State that no longer fields wrestling ruled SDIC wrestling for a period in the mid 60's.

Black Hills State won titles in 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1970.

They may have won more.  I don't know.

If you have any information on SDIC wrestling, please let me know.

and thanks to this new information

Si Tanka won a SDIC title in 1972

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Pacific Northwest Conference Team Titles won By Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Pacific Northwest Conference was a conference consisting of small colleges from Washington, Idaho and Oregon that lasted from 1926 to 1984.

Essentially I have no idea when Pacific Northwest Conference wrestling began or when it ended. I only know that both Whitman and Lewis & Clark, neither of which have wrestling any longer, both won titles.

Whitman in 1964

Lewis & Clark in 1965

If you have any information on Pacific Northwest Conference wrestling, please share.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Western Athletic Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

This is another one that gets a little confusing.  The Western Athletic Conference  is made up of mainly schools that are today Division I but earlier in their history were Division II or another division lower than Division I.

I think at one time the WAC had both a Division I and a Division II status.  I say this because in the same years both Brigham Young and Cal State Bakersfield claim to have won WAC titles.  In those years, Bakersfield was NCAA Division II.

I'm not sure when WAC wrestling ceased to exist.  I'm not sure if WAC was always two Divisions or if it became two divisions.   For other conferences such as the NEIWA there was a time period when they had two separate tournaments.  One for the University division and one for the college division.  It think that happened here.  I'm not for certain.

All I do know is that when the WAC formed in the 1962-1963 season, they sponsored wrestling at the time.   I have information regarding tournaments from 1963 through 1981.

Schools that no longer have wrestling that won WAC titles

Brigham Young (12) 1963, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981

Utah (1) 1969

New Mexico (1) 1972

Colorado State (1) 1974

If you have any information of WAC wrestling 1982 until when it was dropped please share.  Thank you.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer have wrestling.

The Wisconsin States University Conference (WSUC) eventually combined with the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to form the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).  I believe that WSUC titles won are considered the same was WIAC titles won, as Wisconsin Whitewater's list of WIAC titles won, would have to include WSUC titles considering the number listed.

If wrong and WSUC and WIAC are not considered the same, then my apologies.  Let me know in detail and I will correct it, if that is the case.

Today WIAC wrestling is made up for six teams.  La Crosse, Whitewater, Steven's Point, Oshkosh, , Eau Claire and Platteville.  At one time, all official members had wrestling teams.  As far as affiliate members, I believe Finlandia is the only team to have never had a wrestling program.  Or if they did, I have yet to find any information on them.

As to schools that won WIAC titles that no longer have wrestling....

There could have also been teams that no longer have wrestling that won after 1981.  I don't have information past 1981.

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Oregon Collegiate Conference Championships Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The OCC (Oregon Collegiate Conference) ran from 1950-1970.   From what I have been able to gather the conference began sponsoring wrestling in the early 1960's and sponsored it right up to the end when the conference disbanded.

Of the teams that no longer have wrestling programs:

Portland State won titles in 1963, 1964, 1965

Eastern Oregon won titles in 1967, 1968

Gone, Lost and Forgotten: Big Sky Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Big Sky Conference formed in the 1962-1963 season sponsored wrestling right from the get go.  With teams dropping left and right, the last Big Sky conference tournament was held in 1987.

I have all the information regarding the team champions.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

The WVIAC (West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) ran from 1924-2013 and in regards to wrestling I know very little about it. Practically nothing.

All I know is that there was a WVIAC tournament held in 1962 and another in 1970

Fairmont State won both.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Northern California Athletic Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer have Wrestling

The Northern California Athletic Conference which was known at one time as the Far Western Conference ran from 1925 to 1998.  I believe the conference began sponsoring wrestling in the early 1960's or late 1950's.   I don't think they sponsored wrestling through 1998.  I'm not sure when they would have stopped sponsoring wrestling, but I think it was before the conference folded in 1998.

What I do know is that all 13 members at one time in their history had a wrestling program.  The only schools that still have a wrestling programs are San Francisco State & Fresno State.  The other 11 have since dropped.

I have results from 1962 through 1982. That doesn't mean that NCAC wrestling stopped in 1982, it just means that I don't results from 1983 to whenever the last NCAC wrestling tournament was.

If you have any information you can add to this, I would appreciate it.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: North Dakota Collegiate Athletic Conference Team Champions from Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The North Dakota Collegiate Athletic Conference began in 1931 and disbanded after the 1999-2000 season.  As to when they began sponsoring wrestling I have no idea.  I also am uncertain if they sponsored wrestling up until the end.  I don't know.  All I do know is that Valley City State won three conference titles & the last year I've been able to find results for is the 1972-1973 season.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Hoosier/Buckeye Conference Team Champions that No Longer Have Wrestling

It started off as the Hoosier Conference in the 1948-1949 season and with addition of Ohio Teams in the 1969-1970 season became known as the Hoosier/Buckeye Conference.  It ended after the 1985 season.

As to when the conference added wrestling as a sponsored sport, I have no idea.   If the conference had wrestling through 1985, I also have no idea.  I know very little about Hoosier/Buckeye Conference wrestling.  All I know is a few times when schools that no longer have wrestling won the conference tournament.

If you have any more information on Hoosier/Buckeye Conference Wrestling please share I would really appreciate it.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Indiana Collegiate Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Indiana Collegiate Conference ran from the 1950-1951 season through the 1978-1979 season.  While they did sponsor wrestling, I'm not sure if they sponsored it during their entire run.  I can't find any information for Indiana Collegiate Conference wrestling prior to the 1960-1961 season.  So I'm thinking that may have been when the conference added wrestling as a sponsored sport.  They had wrestling up through the end in 1979. That I know.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: 4I Team Champions that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Interstate Intercollegiate Individual Invitational more commonly known as the 4-I was a tournament that started in 1936 and to my knowledge ended in 1969.  From what I have been able to gather I think it was one of the few tournaments that still took place during World War II, when nearly everything else had been shut down.  I only say this because of instances where they talk about the tournament being the 14th or the 17th and doing the math would conclude that they would have had to have had a tournament during those years in the mid 1940's when no one else was.

The other conclusion is that maybe it existed long before 1936 and those years in the 40's were skipped. I don't know. If you do know, let me know and I'll make the corrections.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Presidents Athletic Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

The Presidents Athletic Conference began in the 1955-1956 season and to my knowledge wrestling has always been a part of the conference.   While their have been teams that have dropped their wrestling programs throughout the years, I believe the only team to have ever won a Presidents Athletic Conference championship that no longer has a wrestling program is Allegheny.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Team Champions that No Longer Have Wrestling

The CCIW (College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) started off as the College Conference of Illinois in 1946, later during the 1956-1957 school year when a couple of Wisconsin schools joined it became the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

The conference began sponsoring wrestling during the 1959-1960 season and still sponsors wrestling to this day.  Of all schools that participated in wrestling, only four of those schools have since dropped their wrestling programs. Out of those four, three all won one conference title.

Lake Forest 1960
Carroll 1961
North Park 1973

In case you are wondering the other school to have had wrestling and since dropped in the conference is Illinois Wesleyan.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Mid-Western Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer Have wrestling

The Mid-Western Conference was short lived as the conference only existed for two seasons. 1970-1971 and 1971-1972.  Made up of schools from Indiana and Illinois, wrestling was one of the sports that was sponsored.

Southern Illinois Carbondale won the 1971 team title.

Some sources say that Northern Illinois which still has a wrestling program won the 1972 team title, but other sources say that Southern Illinois Carbondale did.

Wikipedia list Northern Illinois as the team champions while the 1973 NCAA Rule Book list Southern Illinois Carbondale.

If you know which is accurate, please let me know.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Midwest Conference Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

Formed in 1921 the Midwest Conference still exist to this day. Only one of their members Cornell College currently has wrestling.  The Conference sponsored wrestling from 1937-1938 season until the 1993-1994 season.

I don't have results for all of the Midwest Conference tournaments, but I do know of two teams that won at least one title that no longer have wrestling.

To my understanding the first Pete Willson  Wheaton Invitational was held in the 1955-1956 season.  It is a tournament that is still held to this day.

I only have information on the Wheaton Invitational between 1956 and 1981, as well as the last few years which has been won by teams that still have wrestling.  If you know of a team that won the Wheaton Invitational between 1982 and now, that no longer has wrestling let me know.

Formed in 1902 the Ohio Athletic Conference still exist to this day.  From what I have been able to find the conference first began sponsoring wrestling in the 1955-1956 season.  They still sponsor wrestling.  Baldwin-Wallace has won the last four championships.

I have results from 1956 through 1981.  If you know of a team or teams that won any Ohio Athletic Conference Titles that no longer have wrestling programs from 1982 on forward, please share. I'd love to add them to the list.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: CIAA Team Championships won by Schools that No Longer have Wrestling

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) formed in 1912 was originally made up of historically black colleges & I believe (but don't know for sure) that when they began wrestling in the 1940-1941 season they were the first historically black conference to sponsor wrestling.

The CIAA is still around today but no longer sponsors wrestling.  I have found results up through 1981 but nothing 1982 until the date the conference stopped sponsoring wrestling. I also have nothing but a couple of names from 1940-1941 to 1953-1954. (Although I do think the conference dropped wrestling during World War II and then picked it up again after.)

Here are the schools that won CIAA titles that no longer have wrestling programs.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Skyline Conference Team Titles Won By Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

Not to be confused with the current Skyline Conference composed of strictly New York schools, the Skyline Conference was a conference in the western part of the United States that ran from the 1938-1939 season through the 1961-1962 season.

It's a little confusing as I'm not for certain but I believe what the Skyline Conference is, was essentially what was the Eastern Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference was, also known as The Mountain States.   If you read my section on Rocky Mountain, the Eastern Division Winners might also be classified as Skyline Conference champions.  I'm not for sure on that.

Here are the teams that I know can be classified as Skyline Conference Champions that no longer have wrestling programs.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team Championships Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling.

The IIAA was originally known as the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consisting of a ton of teams from Illinois. It was formed in 1908 and disbanded after the 1969-1970 season.  In the 1949-1950 season two schools from Michigan, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan joined the conference and to my understanding weren't thrilled about being in a conference with the name Illinois as they were from Michigan.  Thus the name changed that year from Illinois to Interstate.

From what I have been able to find IIAC sponsored wrestling from the 1952-1953 season up through the end of the conference in 1969-1970.

Here are the teams that won IIAC Titles who no longer have wrestling programs.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Mid-American Conference Team Titles won by Schools Who No Longer Have Wrestling

The Mid-American Conference is still alive and well producing great teams and great individual wrestlers.  Unfortunately since it began wrestling in the 1951-1952 season, some of the schools have dropped wrestling.

Here are the Schools to have won a Mid-American Conference Team Title that no Longer have wrestling.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Pacific Coast Conference Team Titles won by Schools Who No Longer Have Wrestling

From what I was able to find the Pacific Coast Conference was a conference that formed in 1915 and disbanded in 1959.   I'm not sure when the conference started wrestling, but I know that results go back further than what I have them for.   The earliest I have is 1927, but I know that there were tournaments held prior.   I also only have up to 1954, although I'm pretty sure that the conference sponsored wrestling through 1959.

From what I have gathered, the conference was split into two sections.  PCC-North and PCC-South.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Middle Atlantic Conference Team Titles Won By Schools That No Longer Have Wrestling

The Middle Atlantic Conference was founded in 1912.  The first wrestling tournament that I have been able to find was in 1941.  I think there is more information regarding Middle Atlantic Conference wrestling between 1941 & 1963, but I haven't been able to find it yet.

In 1974 Middle Atlantic Conference wrestling split into two divisions.  A University Division and a College Division.  In 1976, the Middle Atlantic Conference became strictly NCAA Division III Schools.

Today the Middle Atlantic Conference is split into two conferences.  The Commonwealth and the Freedom.  In the Freedom conference Delaware Valley, Kings & Wilkes still sponsor wrestling. IN the Commonwealth, Lycoming and Messiah still have wrestling.  There is still a Middle Atlantic Conference tournament held each year with these five teams.  This year's tournament (2020) will be held at Lycoming.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Team Titles Won By Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

This one gets a bit confusing.

From what I have been able to find what we know today as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) was founded in 1909.  Today it is strictly a NCAA Division II conference with official members and affiliate members.  The first RMAC wrestling tournament was held in 1929.  In most years it was split into two separate championships. The RMAC-West Division and the RMAC-East Division.

I believe sometime after the 1949 RMAC tournament, many of the University schools left the conference, making it strictly a college Division conference, thus NCAA Division II.

Today there is a Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open which has many of the RMAC schools that still have wrestling (+ more) competing.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: NEIWA Team Titles Won By Schools That No Longer Have Wrestling

I really have no idea when the first NEIWA (New England Intercollegiate Wrestling Association) tournament was held.  I believe like the EIWA tournament it may be older than the NCAA tournament itself.  I found an article once stating that Harvard was going to hold the conference wrestling championships in 1924, which makes me think that it may have been the NEIWA tournament as the 1924 EIWA tournament was held at Yale.  I've found Harvard participating in other NEIWA championships as well.

Some years the NEIWA championship was split into two divisions.  A University Division and a College Division.  Today there is a New England Wrestling Association, which consist of 10 Division III teams.  I don't know for sure but I would wager to say that it is the same as the NEIWA College Division as Springfield, Wesleyan, Williams, Worcester & U.S. Coast Guard who were all apart of the NEIWA are now a part of the NEWA.

The NEIWA goes back to 1924 from what I can gather.  When exactly it became (if indeed that is what happened) the NEWA and strictly only involved DIII teams I do not know.

What I have is information from 1928 through 1981.    If you have any other information regarding the conference 1982 onward, please share. I'd love to add it to my collection.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: Mason Dixon Conference Team Titles won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

From what I have been able to find, The Mason Dixon Conference Ran from 1936 through 1974.  Ironically enough, I have found wrestling information up through 1977.  So I'm not sure if 1974 is recorded incorrectly by the sources I've found or if perhaps wrestling kept the name in spite of the fact that the official conference disbanded in 1974.  I don't know. If you do know, please let me know and I'll make corrections.

As to what I've found the first wrestling tournament was held in 1952.  If you have anything earlier than 1952 or if you have anything later than 1977, please let me know.

Gone, Lost & Forgotten: SEIWA Team Titles Won by Schools that No Longer Have Wrestling

I'm not exactly sure when the first Southeastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association tournament was held.  It may have very well been 1948, as that is the first one that I can find.  What I do know is that it is said that Auburn won 25 SEIWA team titles. I've read that numerous times when reading articles on the history of Arnold "Swede" Umbach, Tom Milkovich and the Tiger wrestling program.  I've found all the years Auburn won those 25 titles.  As well as the handful of times another team came in and won the title as well.

To my knowledge and I'm more than happy to be corrected if wrong, the last SEIWA tournament was held in 1978.   I have no idea why it ended but would love to know if you have information regarding the tournament.
