2023 NCAA Division III The Season: Alfred State

Sean Peterson 

Culinary Arts major Sean Peterson cooked himself up an impressive 35 victories last season, in route to a 8th place finish at the Mideast Regional. Now that Mike Galton has since graduated, he will need to step it up as the leader of the Pioneers. 

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: SUNY Cortland

 

Looks to be a pretty competitive season for the Red Dragons this season as two of their four NCAA Division III qualifiers return with a potential to once again crown four qualifiers this year. Gone is two time qualifier Demitreus Henry who took 8th place in the nation as well as qualifier Brian Torres.

Cody Merwin 

For good reason Cody Merwin was crowned rookie of the year last season for the Dragons. The sophomore put together a 23-7 record coming within one match shy of qualifying for the NCAA Division III championships in his first try when he finished 4th at the Mideast Regional.

J.C. Cardenas 

Winning a Mideast Regional Title last season on a 17-5 record, Jayden Cardenas will look to win another championship this year.

Ryan Burgbacher

Another Red Dragon that came within a match of NCAA Division III qualification last season was Ryan Burgbacher who finished the year on an 11-5 record.

Chandler Merwin 

Two time NCAA Division III qualifier Chandler Merwin has twice made the Mideast Regional finals finishing as the runner-up in 2020 and as the champion this past season. With tough backup Kyle Klien pushing him in the room, he will look to have another outstanding season after having gone 30-7 last year.

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: McDaniel

 

A team in Maryland made up of wrestlers from Maryland, the Green Terror will compete hard throughout duals, tournaments and the regional this season.

Alex DuFour

Despite having a losing record of 13-18 last season, Alex DuFour still managed a 6th place showing at the Mideast Regional.

Xavier Howard 

Sophomore Xavier Howard earned his first Regional medal last season as he placed 6th on a 19-14 record.

Alex LaVeck 

Senior Alex LaVeck had a very nice 21-6 record last season that led him to a 7th place finish at the Mideast Regional. He will look to improve upon his Regional placing this season.

Michael Bromley 

As is LaVeck, Bromley is a fellow Green Terror going into his final season. He was 24-12 this past season, taking an 8th place finish at the Mideast Regional.

Jaedyn Harris 

Junior Jaedyn Harris put together a 19-15 record last season finishing 6th at the Mideast Regional. He will look to improve upon both his record and his regional placing this season. 

2023 NCAA Division III Wrestling The Season: Centenary

 

Two time Regional place-winners Jacy Jones & Cameron Bruffy have graduated as the Cyclones return two tough wrestlers to their roster, one of which was an NCAA Division III qualifier last season.

Xavier Pena 

Putting together a 26-7 record last season, Xavier Pena made a trip to the NCAA Division III tournament after a strong 3rd place showing at the Mideast Regional. He will look to earn another qualification this season.

Keevon Berry 

Another tough Cyclone going into his junior season is Keevon Berry. Putting together a 17-10 record last season, he finished 7th in the Mideast Regional. 

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: Oswego State

Charlie Grygas 

With Isaac Matthews now graduated it'll be up to senior Charlie Grygas to lead the way for the Lakers this season. A two time NCAA Division III qualifier, he has thus far finished 3rd & 2nd in the Mideast Regional. A match shy of All American honors last season, he has won two Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference titles. He went 27-5 last year. 

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: SUNY-Oneonta

Michael Blando

Criminal Justice major Michael Blandon enters his final season as a Red Dragon coming off of a 25-11 record with a 6th place finish at the Mideast Regional. He will look to improve upon that placing.

Jhordyn Innocent 

Another senior looking to earn a second Mideast Regional placing will be Jhordyn Innocent who took 8th last season on a 17-8 record. 

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: Ursinus

 

The Bears wrestling program is a reminder of how hard of a slap in the face graduation came sometimes be. You see guys that were right there that came within a nose hair of reaching their goal and it just kills you that they don't have another year left to try and make it happen. Centennial Conference Champion (CCC) Gary Nagle was one of those guys. He finished 4th at the Mideast Regional last season, one match shy of NCAA Division III qualification. Malcolm Hunt was another who finished 4th. Then there was also Jason Carter who finished 5th last season and 4th in 2020. On the bright side the Bears do return a NCAA Division III qualifier along with another wrestler more than capable of qualifying & two more who will fight hard throughout duals, the conference & the regional.

Terry Adams 

Senior Terry Adams looks to add to his list of credential and accomplishments this season having taken 3rd place at the Mideast Regional on a 24-7 record last year. He will go for a second NCAA Division III qualification this season as well as a third appearance in the CCC. A champion in 2020, he was a runner-up las season.

Romeo Rodriguez

Romeo Rodriguez enters his final season as a Bear posting a 19-13 record last season & an 8th place finish at the Mideast Regional.  He will look to improve his record and his regional placing this year.

Dante Monaco 

The two time New Jersey state qualifier Dante Monaco took a 17-12 record last season, placing 7th at the Mideast Regional. A hard worker who buys into the program, look for some major improvements out of this junior.

Shawn Marchesano 

It's not a stretch to think that senior Shawn Marchesano could likely join Terry Adams in being a NCAA Division III qualifier. He took a 22-10 record last season to a 5th place finish at the Mideast Regional.

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: Jersey City

 

As NCAA Division III qualifier Jeff Johnson graduates as Mideast Regional place-winner Matt Armamento recently took a job as a police officer.  Jason Estevez a varsity wrestler at Buffalo joins the coaching staff to help head Coach Harry Turner & staff to grow the Gothic Knight's program.

Damienlee Torres 

The future veterinarian was 11-3 in his first season as a Gothic Knight las season taking 7th place honors at the Mideast Regional. He will look to garner more victories and improve upon his regional placing this season.

Andre Ruiz 

Andre Ruiz entered into his rookie season at Jersey City last year coming off of 140 wins in high school. Going 14-12 he took 6th place at the Mideast Regional & he had an outstanding victory over J.C. Cardenas of SUNY-Cortland who won the Regional as well as an ECWC title.  He will look to improve his record as well as his regional placing in 22'-23'.

Jeff Johnson 

The Gothic Knights first ever NCAA Division III qualifier, Jeff Johnson returns after posting a 17-8 record, earning a bronze medal at the Mideast Regional.

Marcus Hebron 

Look for Marcus Hebron a district champ & New Jersey state place winner from Lower Cape May to make some noise for the Gothic Knights this season.  

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: The College of New Jersey

 

There's one thing that that Lions illustrate as well as anyone this season & that is the importance of backups. While the Lions do lose some very tough competitors to graduation they have some excellent replacements for them as well. They crowned an All American last season, I think this year they very well could crown two.  A nod to graduates Daniel Surich who was 8th in the nation last season, as well as Thomas Marretta who was a match away from placing, two time NCAA Division III qualifier Quinn Haddad and Jake Giordano.

Ryan Rosenthal 

A scholar All American in his first season as a Lion, Ryan Rosenthal finished 18-5 with a 5th place finish at the Mideast Regional. With three seasons of eligibility left, we're looking at a guy who will have multiple NCAA Division III qualifications before his career is said and done.

Domenic Difrancescantonio 

I can quadruple check & I'm always afraid I've misspelled his last name.  Domenic DiFrancescantonio went 20-5 on the season last year, winning the Mideast Regional title. In his final season as a Lion he is more than capable of ending his career an NCAA Division III All American.

Michael Conklin 

Another extremely tough freshman on the squad last season, Michael Conklin made the Mideast Regional finals and took an 8th place finish at the NCAA Division III championships. He has the potential to be a rare four time All American.

Matt Sacco 

Going 17-5 on the season last year, Matt Sacco was one match shy of earning All American honors after taking a runner-up finish at the Mideast Regional. He will look to earn that top 8 national finish in what will be his final year as a Lion.

Matt Surich or Nick Sacco 

Matt Surich was 6th at the Mideast Regional last season on a 13-12 record. He will be challenged for his spot this season by Nick Sacco who was 13-6 on the season last year.  It should be a good wrestle-off.

Reid Colella

Another Scholar All American for the Lions, Reid Colella enters his final season after going 16-8 on the year with a 7th place finish at the Mideast Regional. Probably not looking at NCAA Division III qualification, but he will come in important throughout duals & other tournaments.

Joe Daddario 

It's not easy to replace someone like All American Daniel Surich but I do believe that Joe Daddario will more than hold his own in the position this season. He was 15-6 on the 21'-22' year.

Alex Kostantas 

Replacing two time NCAA Division III qualifier Quinn Haddad will most likely be Alex Kostantas who was 9-2 last season as a freshman.

Peter Wersinger 

Now that Mideast Regional champion Thomas Marretta has graduated, Peter Wersinger will get a shot at representing the Lions at the Regional this season. He was 18-4 last year & I'm anxious to see how he matches up against the top competition.

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: R.I.T.

 

The Tigers lose two of their best wrestlers to graduation in two time NCAA Division III All American Kaidon Winters who was 5th in 2019 making the national finals last season, as well as Zach Stedeford who took 6th place All American honors last season. Chris Horton a NCAA Division III qualifier in 2020 has also graduated.  Returning are two qualifiers, one of which was an All American.

Mike Glynn had a good showing last season going 27-10 on the year with a 5th place finish at the Mideast Regional. The New Hampshire native will contend for NCAA Division III qualification this season.

Austin Lamb 

The Accounting major with 206 High School victories continues to rack up the wins and the accomplishments as he heads into his senior season.  Last year he made the Mideast Regional finals and took 8th place All American honors on a 25-9 record. He will look earn a second All American honor this season.

Colby Giroux

Fluent in sign language with the goal of one day being a Physician's Assistant, Colby Giroux enters his senior season after placing 6th at the Mideast Regional last year. On a good day, he is capable of NCAA Division III qualification.

Josh Harkless 

A very tough sophomore, Josh Harless went 32-11 qualifying for his first NCAA Division III appearance last season with a 3rd place finish at the Mideast Regional.

2023 NCAA Division III The Season: Muhlenberg

 

The spoils goes to the Victors or so they say. Muhlenberg looks to be rather competitive within the conference as well as the regional as they should also send a fair number of wrestlers to the NCAA Division III tournament. A young team made up of a lot of sophomores graduation only took Luca Colestock a two time Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) champion.

Joey Lamparelli 

The four time New Jersey state qualifier from Allentown had himself a pretty good sophomore season last year going 32-9 which was a 3rd place finish within the CCC & a runner-up finish at the Mideast Regional. Guy as the tools to be top 8 by the end of the season & will have to use them to their fullest capacity in order to earn that honor.

Frank DiEsso 

Four time New Jersey High School State qualifier Frank DiEsso had a pretty good freshman season last year for the Victors going 24-7. 7th probably wasn't exactly where he wanted to finish in his first Mideast Regional but in a tournament with twenty teams it's still really good for a freshman. He will look to improve upon his regional placing this season.

Brandon Bowles 

With the heart, determination and tenacity that Brandon Bowles demonstrated last year in his first season of varsity collegiate wrestling it's hard to believe that he only made the state championships of New Jersey once during his high school career. He spent most of the season injured & yet came back to wrestle extremely strong at the regional tournament. Losing early on he worked his way back through the consolations including avenging his loss in the consolation finals to take 3rd place and earn his first trip to the national tournament. In the short list of wrestlers who were better collegiately than they were in high school, I'll prematurely add him to the list.

Anson Dewar 

Another tough sophomore, Anson Dewar holds the school record at Merrimack High School in New Hampshire for the most amount of career wins with 135. He's already on his way to racking up quite a few wins at Muhlenberg as well as he collected 28 this past season. A 3rd place finish in the CCC, he was one win shy of NCAA Division III qualification with a 4th place finish at the Mideast Regional.

Nico Berlingeri 

If you have read me for very long you know that it is pulling teeth to get me to say much about freshmen at the NAIA, DIII or DII levels.  When it comes to true freshman it's even hard to get me to say anything at the DI level. I've always been one that wants to see a guy have a full year of varsity wrestling under his belt before I make too many evaluations. Every once in a while I'll make an exception. This is one of them. I saw a few of his redshirt matches from  last year and have to say that he looked very tough. He likes to rack up the points and go for the fall. I think the New Jersey native will make a scene within the CCC and the Mideast Regional this season.
